almost daily photo: April 13th

My RSS feed broke, the engine light in my car is on, I was late to meet a friend at the bakery and when I got there I knocked a vase off of a table in a dramatic fashion, the cap of a Sharpie in my bag came off leaving some ugly black spots and when I got home I discovered I have a run in my Spanx. It's only 1:30 in the afternoon. I sincerely hope your day is going better than mine.

update: I also forgot to put a title on this post, which I've just fixed. Hey, if you are looking at this in a feed reader and cannot see the moody photo of the offending Sharpie let me know and I'll try to figure out why RSS might still be broken. My thanks!

Ok, so this photo is from yesterday when we were at the Emerald City Comicon, but today didn't have much going on and I wanted to take a moment to say how I enjoyed wandering around ECCC, and to give a shoutout to the organizers for taking the time to give me a visitors badge (my husband Scott [1] plays bass for the awesome nerd rock band Kirby Krackle [2], and one half of the songwriters for Kirby Krackle is Jim Demonakos, who founded ECCC and does an awesome job of making it better each year, thus the badge). I mostly wanted to note something that The Stranger [3] also noticed: there were a lot of girls there. I saw women of all ages, some with their daughters, all there because they love comic books. Yay!

experiments in Rainbow Cakes

This past St. Patrick's Day I made a Leprechaun Trap Cake [1], shown above, which revealed a nice rainbow shape inside each slice. I created the rainbow by pouring colored cake batter into an angel food cake pan one color on top of the other and it came out surprisingly well. (More details on the amounts of colored batter I used are in the original post [2].) At the time I wondered if doubling the recipe or using different cake pans would result in the same effect and I've made a half dozen cakes over the past month to find out. The results are below and it turns out the answer is "nope".

For each of the following cakes I used the same boxed white cake mix, the same gel food colorings and the same technique to layer the batter.

Two boxes of cake mix in an angel food cake pan. For my original cake I used one box of cake mix in this same angel food cake pan. Doubling the amount makes a big difference and the cake almost spilled over the top of the pan while baking. If I'd leveled this one I would have had a swoopy and uneven rainbow, but it would have been there.

Half a box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. This was my most successful test variation. The cake shown has been leveled and turned out onto a plate, each slice had half a rainbow.

One box of cake mix in a 6 inch round cake pan. I was hoping that the flat bottom of the cake pan with lots of batter would result in a tall rainbow, but instead I got something that looks more like a volcano. I didn't level this cake.

Half a box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. I hoped the flat bottom of a loaf pan would give me similar results to the bundt pan but the batter didn't quite behave the same way. I leveled this cake before cutting into it and didn't realize that the leveled top held all the blue and purple colors, so I put it back on for the sake of the picture.

One box of cake mix in a 4.5 x 8.5 inch loaf pan. Another loaf pan experiment this time with twice the batter, and another volcano like result.

Two boxes of cake mix in a round mixing bowl. Here again I was hoping a tall cake would result in a nice tall rainbow. I didn't get that but I did get some very impressive swirling down the center of the cake and back up around the sides of the bowl. The center of this cake never quite baked. A failure all around but it's pretty cool to see how the batter moves while it's baking.

My conclusion is that using less batter in a flat bottomed pan will more likely result in the rainbow arch I was hoping for. And that I got very, very lucky for the first version of this cake [3] that I made to come out so nicely. Call it the luck of the Irish?

Anatomy Dresses

anatomy_dresses.jpg

Rachel Wright of Mobile, AL creates some interesting repurposed clothing. (Her Etsy shop is called Toolgrrl Designs.) The dresses she created for her series, The Dream Anatomy, are intriguing and beautiful.

The Dream Anatomy series explore these imagined realms inside the body. Because these garments are meant to be worn, the boundary between the internal and the external is blurred. The invisible is made visible: wear your inside on the outside. By using women's slips and nighties, articles that were not originally intended for public life, I am playiing with the line between the public and the private arenas.

How-To: Dress Up Bird Wings

child_bird_wings.jpg

When I first saw this fun pair of dress up bird wings from Eri of Llevo el Invierno on Prudent Baby, I thought to myself, "Heck, for the kids, sure ... but I want a pair, too!" Turns out, they were actually inspired by a pair for adults that was shared on Burda Style last fall. Eri's tutorial is for a kid-sized set of wings, but I'm guessing the idea could be easily upsized for adults and would make a really fun family group Halloween costume. You can get the full tutorial over on Prudent Baby.

Recipe: Madeira Cake

In the Kitchen

By Andrew Lewis

Whenever I think of the word 'cake' the first image in my mind is a Madiera cake. It's my birthday cake of choice. It has a wonderful texture, and a rich flavor that is hard to beat. In short, I love Madiera cake. It's easy to make, keeps well, and the recipe is simple enough that I don't have to look it up before I start making it. It's a light cake that you can make well in advance of a picnic or tea party, and it always seems to turn out well.

Granny Stripe Blanket

I love this modern take on the granny square with The Purl Bee's new pattern to make a granny stripe blanket. The photo above is a great detail shot showing the different color options but I love the idea of even making the stripes closer together and having a shade of lovely colors to add in the mix.
Joelle from The Purl Bee writes:

The Granny Stripe is a crochet pattern that is made just like the iconic Granny Square, but instead of stitching around and around a center square, it is made by stitching back and forth in rows. The beauty of the Granny Stripe pattern is how effortlessly it lends itself to graphic elements, like bright stripes or big blocks of color.

Plush Portal Turret Speaks, Lights Up

Jonathan Guberman writes:

We've named her Trudi. Judging by her head-to-body ratio, Trudi's a baby turret.

Features:

  • Authentic game dialogue
  • Motion detector, so it knows when you're there and when you've left
  • Pressure sensor, so it knows when you've picked it up
  • Tilt sensor, so it knows when you've knocked it over
  • LED light-up eye
  • Exaggerated features for extra adorableness

I can barely hem a pair of pants, so I'm certainly not skilled enough to design and make a plush toy. Fortunately, I was introduced to Leigh Nunan; amongst other things, Leigh has created an incredible giant squid plushie that's about twice as large as I am. Leigh both designed the turret pattern and sewed it together (which, to me, is essentially magic).

Dalek Cupcakes And Dr. Who Food & Craft Roundup

chocolate_peanutbutter_dalek_cupcakes.jpg

Tomorrow is the season premiere of Dr. Who, and if you're hosting a watching party be sure to check out these cool chocolate and peanut butter Dalek cupcakes from Stephanie of Jedi Science.

I really wanted a good Dalek Cupcake for the party. I'd seen lots of versions on the internet, but none of which I thought looked that great. Determined to make on better, we spent a week going over options. Then we saw the mini muffin liners while at the grocery store and it all came together. Mini Cupcakes with mini Reese's!! Obviously it was a success. Victory!!

I love it how they came out, and it doesn't hurt that peanut butter and chocolate is one of my favorite flavor combos!

If you want more fun ways to celebrate, be sure to check out some of these popular Dr. Who food and craft projects that we've featured here on Craft.

almost daily photo: Mar. 31st

Whenever I bake I end up making last minute trips to the grocery store for one ingredient or the other. This time my dough for the Jar of Stars [1] needed to rest over night and in order to get it made I needed to make a late night trip. While there this packaging for something else entirely caught my (tired) eye.

daily photo thing update: Today I'm finally posting a backlog of photos all at once and renaming them "almost daily photo" because I'm no good at keeping up with stuff and, as it turns out, I'm really not good at keeping up with stuff when I've put a set of artificial rules on myself. So I'll try to post a photo a day but if I'm busy or got nothing I won't. I mean, I don't want to start resenting my own self, right?

Seattle got snow last night and though we don't have cabin fever yet I thought it was a great time to open my latest impulse purchase, itty bitty Lincoln Logs. I found these at the drugstore and they came as a set of four canisters meant as party favors, each one holding the bits needed to make one teensy weensy log cabin. That there is a quarter in the picture for some scale. I was hoping to take one outside and put it on a little mound of snow to grab a picture, but the slightest movements caused the cabin to fall apart. I'm going to open all the canisters and see if I can build a really tall mini Lincoln Log tower to knock down.

Kitchen 101: Basic Meringue

In the Kitchen

By Katie Goodman

Meringue is a light, sweet dessert made mostly from egg whites and sugar and can be used for various purposes, depending on how it is cooked.

Cooking meringue low and slow, as you would for a pavlova, will produce a crisp, dry product. Meringue may also be cooked for shorter periods at a higher temperature with the end result being a soft meringue with browned peaks on top (as you would in a lemon meringue pie).

Various desserts using meringue as a base include: angel food cake, pavlova, Baked Alaska, key lime pie, lemon meringue pie and Eton mess.

How-To: Rewire a Lamp

Bob Tedeschi wrote about rewiring a lamp in the NY Times!

SOMEHOW, everything I fix ends up far uglier than it was when I started. It's my zero-sum approach to handyman projects: what you gain in functionality, you lose in beauty.

But recently I thought, what if I start with ugly? There would be nothing but upside, right?

I tested this theory last week with my first task in the realm of electrical repair, the rewiring of an old lamp. My local secondhand store had some beautiful old lamps that, with some new wiring, might not burn down my house. But I spared them, and chose something that, no matter what damage I inflicted, couldn't possibly be uglier.

Handmade Mexican Pointy Boots

"We follow the fashion trend of the pointy boots." I had never heard of this particular type of footwear, but this episode of Behind The Seams from Vice opened my eyes to a whole new world. The men featured create their own glamorous and customized pointy boots, the pointier the better! Beyond that, they have developed an entire lifestyle dedicated to showcasing their shoes. These cobblers wear skinny jeans to show them off and they choreograph dances for performing in their pointy boots at tribal music shows. They are taking DIY fashion to the next level.

Inside the Threadless Photo Department

Inside the Threadless Photo Department from PhotoShelter.com on Vimeo.

MAKE's fabulous ex-photo intern, Ed, turned me on to this video. Get ready for an awesome peek behind the scenes of the photo department at Threadless, the popular community-based, e-commerce t-shirt company based out of Chi-town. I love how opportunist they are, working quickly and often with whatever's on-hand to create original product shots in locations such as junkyards, motorcycle repair shops, the alleyway behind the studio, and a graffitied truck inside the warehouse. Plus, I think it's just rad that they use their friends and employees as models. Be sure to look for staff photographer Sean Dorgan's homemade beauty dish, constructed from a planter and CD case -- super crafty!

Paper Flower Tutorial

Patricia of A Little Hut shares her technique for making this beautifully detailed paper flower. I love the scoring of the cardstock and the quilled center to give it a sense of texture and depth. Use these for gift boxes, favors, napkin rings, or a brooch for mom on Mother's Day!

I have received a couple of letters lately kindly asking what has happened to whipup lately. It’s changed they say, looks different, the focus is different, there is more cooking, more kids stuff. What is going on? At first I bristled slightly but then I had to admit it is all true – it has [...]

How-To: Clothespin Bunny

clothespin_bunny.jpg

Here's an adorable and easy craft you can whip up in time for the Easter weekend. Maya of Maya*Made shows you how to make a wee bunny from a clothespin. The bunny even has posable arms! I imagine the kids would have fun picking out fabric for the bunny's body from your fabric scraps.
