How-To: Diaper And Wipes Clutch

diaper_wipes_clutch.jpg

When I first pulled up this snazzy looking clutch post on my computer, I was confused ... "Why does it say 'poopy clutch?' Is that a typo?" And then I realized, this wasn't some super classy clutch for a night on the town, it's a beautiful and practical clutch for holding diapers and wipes for quick changes when you're out with your kids. Brilliant! Melissa of I Still Love You shares her pattern for a leather or vinyl envelope-style diaper clutch, with scallop edge and fabric variations. [via PapernStitch]

I'm deciding which vacuum to buy (ours is, well, sad) and I ended up making myself a chart to help me sort out which one I wanted. Shown here are three of my favorite tools for chart making: an Apex mechanical pencil which is nice and sturdy, has clicky action that lets the lead out bit by bit and a nice eraser that you can twist up and down; a pencil shaped eraser from Muji, I adore these; and MAC Lipglass, a new favorite discovery. The vacuum choice is coming down to which color I like best, even I am rolling my eyes at myself over this one.

Firefly Captain Mal Amigurumi

IMG_0205.JPG

One of my favorite parts of Maker Faire are all the great people that stop by the Craft booth. I was pleasantly surprised when one guest stopped by to show me a Captain Mal, from Firefly, amigurumi plush (via Yarnydoom) his friend Megann Skilton made. Megann couldn't make it to Maker Faire Bay Area, so Captain Mal visited in her place. I gave him a Craft pinwheel and button to celebrate his visit.

Sewing Productivity Tips

tilly_productivity.jpg

I met so many fun and creative people this weekend at Maker Faire. I'm adding all sorts of great new blogs to my reader and Tilly and the Buttons is one of them. One of her most recent posts caught my eye - tips for sewing productivity from guest poster Debi of My Happy Sewing Place. Debi is currently sewing one garment per week - something tells me she knows a thing or two about being productive!

May Birthday Giveaway: The Wilder Life

[1]

This here website started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to be able to offer three lucky winners (that's you! and you! and, yes, you!) a copy of The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie [2] by Wendy McClure. Wendy's site, Pound [3], was among the very first I started reading way back-in-the-day and I followed along as she investigated her love for Laura Ingalls Wilder. I somehow missed out on the whole Little House experience and I have to say I'm jealous. (Anne of Green Gables? Frodo? Susan and Lucy? All yes. Little House? I'm feeling like I have to catch up to the rest of you.)

If you have an affinity for Little House this book is for you. To win a copy please leave a comment with this entry, and if you'd like something to talk about answer this question: Have you ever worn a bonnet? I'll go first: Yes! But not on purpose. I remember my aunt making me wear an acclaimedly homemade bonnet one the moment I visited Oklahoma. Shortly thereafter we went through a drive-through, which I think was Sonic. I feared they had cameras and could see my polite bonnet wearing shame. I knew the adults were getting away with something because my older and younger cousins were not required to wear bonnets. Luckily the pointing and laughing were kept to a minimum. Ok, embarrassing childhood snapshot time is over. You have until Tuesday, May 10th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [4] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks for entering!

How-To: Thread Sketching

thread_sketching.jpg

Erin of Elysian Studios created a wonderfully simple tutorial for using your sewing machine as a sketching tool. Add a darning foot, drop your feed dogs, and start drawing with thread. (Don't worry, she provides a lot more detail than that right over here.

I love how she's layered paper and fabric into a collage and then sketched over the layers. Couldn't you see an amazing set of placemats or a custom lamp shade made from this technique?

I left the house and didn't bring a coat with me today, it was gloriously sunny and warmish. People in Seattle talk about the weather too damn much, and this time of year I find myself doing it as well. We have mild winters without much snow and while I appreciate the lack of icy roads the downside is seemingly endless stretches of gloomy overcast skies. Generally I like the excuse to stay all cozy indoors and do repetitive things (knitting, video games, drinking, obsessing) but the mood stealthily swings into desperation sometime in late February. Its around this time of year that I get nostalgic for Cleveland's snowy winters because at least they broke up the winter into an array of difficult weather that brought new and exciting things to have to deal with. In contrast we here in Seattle tend to be very enthusiastic when the sun is out, like today. Especially when you check Twitter to find that a friend like A Chow Life [1] reports: "I just looked at the 10 day forecast. Rain-- every single day." Then you hastily take a photo of the all too soon setting sun bouncing against a wall so you can remember what it felt like when Friday of next week rolls around and you start to suspect you're actually stuck in some creepy sunshine-less experiment.

In less Need To Snap Out Of It news, today I bought a giant plastic egg for what I hope will become a neat-o Easter thing. We'll see.

Today I learned that my little-er camera needs to manually be set to macro (I knew this but was in denial) and that even when in macro it still won't focus on the point you'd like if that point is very bright. Good to know.

How-To: Amigurumi Link, from Legend of Zelda

ami_link.jpg

This adorable amigurumi version of Link from the Legend of Zelda video games is a collaborative effort. First came this pattern for Link, which was written by Becchin, a Japanese amigurimi artist. It was then translated to English by Tanoshimou.

Then, Stephanie at All About Ami found the pattern and designed a Hyrulian shield and sword to go with it. (For anyone unfamiliar with the game franchise, Hyrule is Link's homeland, and the sword and shield figure prominently in his many quests.)

...Those who are familiar with the games are likely jumping up and down right now. I know I am!

My internet has been nonexistant today so I'm sending this from my iPhone. This is a photo of the bolognese I started at 10am. I'm starting to suspect the recipe author and I have different definitions of "a low simmer". Still, I think given enough time it might be impossible (perhaps Megan proof?) for a bolognese to turn out badly. It would be easier to pass the time if I has the Internet to amuse me. So far I've cleaned the house and washed the dishes and practiced with eyeshadow to create a smoky eye (it's not supposed to make me look like I'm upset, right?) and I've even sorted some kitchen cabinets. The Internet better return or I'll have my tax preparation done before the day is out.

Sally Cardigan KAL: The Steek!

banner_KAL_sally_cardigan.gif

Now to the drama: the steek!

This time around, I got impatient and decided to work my reinforcement without blocking (I'd recommend blocking first - I felt much less confident working with the puckered fabric). I almost cut the steek without blocking as well. But I lost my nerve at the last second (or you could say I came to my senses) - and I'm glad I did, because the blocked fabric is so much more stable!

Here's my reinforced steek, ready to cut.

How-To: Toy Animal Rack

Style starts at home, and your home should be filled with things that make you happy. Nothing makes me happier than animals of all kinds, so I incorporate them into my home decor as much as possible. It's starting to look like a jungle in here! Today we add another rad element with my toy animals racks.

Animal Rack-5.jpg

I found these adorable little animal figurines at an art store, and upon seeing Anthropologie's white ceramic animal hooks, I wanted to do the same using my small creatures. Then I came across Steph Mantis's and couldn't believe my eyes. This was exactly what I pictured. You can purchase one of Steph Mantis's racks or make your own with me as shown in today's video!

Animal Rack-3.jpg

One of the coolest things about this project (aside from the fact that it is adorable!) is that it is perfect to customize. My brother-in-law loves dinosaurs, so I could do a whole rack of different dinos for him. Or I could do barnyard animals for my little nephew Aidan, or just dogs for my husband who is obsessed with all things canine. The dowels make the animals interchangeable, so you can switch them up for the season or mood. What animals would you include? Leave in a comment and enjoy the video!

May Birthday Giveaway: Troubadour Tote from Crystalyn Kae

[1]

What's going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Welcome to Wednesday and it's giveaway: a Trourbadour Tote Bag [2] in the color of your choice from Crystalyn Kae. This is an awesome bag, it can fit a laptop (up to a 15" Macbook), has many useful interior pockets (go see the pictures [3]), a zipper top, and a gathered design in front that allows you to stuff the bag should you need (it can hold a water bottle and a pair of shoes, I see possibilities here). I see Crystalyn Kae bags on the shoulders of girls wherever I go in Seattle, her Topstitch Hobo [4] seems to be a favorite (at least from my highly unscientific pole of, well, my observations) and she always has a nice big booth at UCU [5] (a big craft and handmade goods show here in Seattle that is worth traveling for). Crystalyn Kae bags are made from an embossed coated canvas which is lightweight and waterproof (necessary here) and it can even be thrown into the washer. The bags are all made by hand in the US and it's very good construction (I have examined it), have comfortable handles, most of them are vegan (unless otherwise noted), and have perfectly chosen contrasting lining. One of her newest items is the Pleated Clutch [6] and I think I have a crush on it.

If you'd like to win the fabulous Troubadour Tote Bag please leave a comment with this post, and if you'd like something to chat about answer this question: Do you prefer your bags in neutrals or bright colors? Me? I have been trying my utmost to buy bags in bright colors since my wardrobe stubbornly, perhaps reliably, stays in the range of black to gray. Having colorful bags means I can accessorize to my mood without thinking too much about it. So far it's working, I think. Alright, you have until 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 19th to enter, the fine print [7] applies. Good luck! Closed, thank you for entering!

Since you liked yesterday's origami Iron Man so much, you might also enjoy the wonders over at The Geekigami Flickr Pool. There's a group of artists over there folding things like battle robots, Cthulu, and the Starship Enterprise.

Can you believe this E.T. was folded from a single square of paper?
